In accordance with AB 2761 and to maintain transparency with our community, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is providing information regarding an in-custody death that occurred at the San Joaquin County Jail.
On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, shortly after 1:00 a.m., a 44-year-old male was found unresponsive inside his cell within the Medical Housing Unit at the San Joaquin County Jail.
Custody staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR, until personnel from the Stockton Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived and continued medical aid. Despite life-saving efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased.
As is standard protocol for all in-custody deaths, a Protocol Investigation was initiated. Detectives from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, along with an investigator from the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office, responded to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
The cause and manner of death remain under investigation pending final determination by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
