Lieutenant Knapp was hired as a Correctional Officer in September 2004 after graduating from the CO Academy and was assigned to the Jail Core. In April 2008, he became a Custody Training Officer and then served on the Custody Emergency Response team starting July of the same year.

In December 2012, Knapp was promoted to Correctional Sergeant and assigned to the South Jail. Two years later in January 2014, he was assigned as Relief Sergeant. A year later in March of 2015, he promoted to Sergeant of Professional Standards. In December 2017, Knapp was promoted to Correctional Lieutenant and assigned to the Honor Farm, Alternative Sentencing, and Community Corp Program.

In July of 2020, he was assigned as the Lieutenant of Records, Training, and Compliance.
