Information About CCW
The CCW Permit application process is the same for all New, Renewal, Modification and Duplicate permits. ALL applications MUST be completed in the online Permitium application. Make sure you save the Order Tracker Number that is assigned once your application is submitted and the password you created.
The application cannot be saved and completed at a later date. Once submitted, then the application is saved. If errors or changes need to be made to the application, the applicant can upload additional documents or a letter explaining the error.
Issuance Criteria for Consideration Pursuant to California Penal Code 26150-26225, and 29610.
- Age Restriction- All applicants must be 21 years or older
- Good Character- Applicants must have good character with respect to their ability to responsibly and safely carry
and use a concealed weapon - Residency – All applicants must provide proof that they are a resident of San Joaquin County or a city within San
Joaquin County - Be free from criminal convictions that would disqualify the applicant from carrying a firearm. Fingerprints will
be required and a complete criminal background check will be conducted - Be free from any psychological conditions that might make the applicant unsuitable for carrying a firearm
- Proof that the person is a citizen of the United States (or by providing one of the following: Naturalization
documents, Valid US Passport, Valid Permanent Resident Card, or out of country Military Birth Certificate) - Complete required training and weapon qualification. (New Applicants: DO NOT take any firearm training
courses prior to receiving official notification that your CCW has been approved) - Important Reminder: It is your responsibility to know your workplace policy on weapons at work
Disclaimer: By law, the Sheriff has the discretion to approve or deny CCW license applications as well as revoke licenses that have already been issued.
New CCW Permits
16 –hour training course that included instruction on firearm safety and the law regarding the permissible use of a firearm. You must qualify with each firearm you want listed on your CCW Permit (maximum 3 firearms).
Do NOT take any training until you have received official notice that your CCW Permit has been APPROVED, and you have been instructed to take the 16-hour training.
CCW Renewal Permits (every 2 years)
Complete a 8-hour legal firearms update refresher course. Qualify with each firearm you want listed on your CCW Permit (maximum 3 firearms).
CCW Modifications (Add new weapon to existing permit)
If you want to add a firearm to your permit a qualification certificate is required on each firearm you want listed on the permit (maximum 3 firearms).
All training must be completed in the presence of a certified instructor. Self-study programs are not accepted, nor count toward the hourly training requirements.

Scanned documents cannot be over 5 MB in size. Make sure to complete your application in one sitting. You cannot save your progress and finish the application at a later date. Select the correct type of permit to view applicable fees: standard, reserve, judicial, modification (to update a current permit), or duplicate (if your current permit is lost or stolen). If your permit is lost or stolen, you must contact the Sheriff’s Office at (209) 468-5822 within 10 days and you must make a crime report with the jurisdiction where it was lost or stolen. Once your application has been submitted and your fees have been paid, changes cannot be made to the original document.

New CCW applicants must make a self-selected LiveScan, interview, and photograph appointment. This appointment is made when filling out a NEW application. You will be contacted by telephone by a CCW Background Investigator AFTER your fingerprint results have been returned by FBI/DOJ and your file is being worked. If you need to change your LiveScan Fingerprint appointment date, then click the link below.

Once you have been notified that your application for a CCW permit (New, Renewal, Modification or Duplicate CCW) has been approved by the Sheriff, you will self-select a pickup appointment within the Permitium system.
When you schedule your Pick-up appointment or want to check on the status of an existing application, you will need your Permitium Order Tracker Number, the email address used when applying, and the password you created during your original application process. Please bring a valid California Driver’s License or government-issued photo ID. We will not be able to issue your permit without proper identification. Make sure to keep your order tracker number and password to view the progress of your file.
