Captain Petrino was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in February of 2009. The first few years of Joe’s career were spent assigned as a Deputy in the Patrol Division. In June of 2012, he became the department’s head Rangemaster and lead instructor on various use-of-force-related training areas.

In December of 2014, Joe was promoted to sergeant and assigned to the Patrol Division as the Community Car Unit sergeant where he supervised the Community Car Unit, the Community Service and Enforcement Team (CSET), VICE operations, the School Resource program, Mountain House Community Service District police services and numerous other special enforcement and operational areas of the Filed Forces Division.

In June of 2017, Joe promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and stayed in the Patrol Division as the District Commander. In this assignment, he oversaw the operations of the Community Car Program, Community Service and Enforcement Team, Gang Investigations, OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) & ABC Grants, County Special Events, and Mountain House Community Service District. He also serves as the Board of Supervisors Liaison.

In January of 2019, Joe was re-assigned as the Patrol Division Administrative Lieutenant. In this position, he was second in command of the division to the Captain of Patrol and managed the day-to-day operations of Patrol Division.

In September of 2019, Joe promoted to the rank of Captain and took command of the Professional Standards Division (PSD). As the division head, he oversees all divisional efforts which include: background investigations and processing of all applicants for hire within the office, building security clearances, Concealed Weapon (CCW) permits, and is the litigation liaison to County Counsel. Captain Petrino also has oversight of the Evidence Room, all recruitment-related efforts, Coleman Range operations, the Public Information Officers and the Internal Affair’s Unit.

Captain Petrino will be a graduate of P.O.S.T. Command College Session 67 in August of 2021. Joe obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2005 from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. In 2008, he obtained his Master’s Degree in Psychology, with a concentration in Organization Development from Sonoma State University.
