Steve Kowalczyk was hired as a Correctional Officer in April 2002 and assigned to the South Jail. In 2003 he joined the Classification Unit and then in 2006 was assigned to the Transition Team AB900. In 2007, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the South Jail.

In 2010 he became a Custody Training Sergeant and then was assigned to the Honor Farm in 2011. In 2013 he was assigned to the Relief team as Sergeant and in 2014 was assigned again to the South Jail as Sergeant. In 2015 he was assigned to the Honor Farm and then in 2016 was assigned to the JMS/AB109/Realignment as a Sergeant.

In 2017, Kowalczyk was promoted to Correctional Lieutenant and assigned to JMS/AB109/Realignment. In 2018, he was assigned to Correctional Lieutenant and was assigned to Transportation and Jail Core. In 2020 he was assigned to Watch Commander.
