To maintain transparency with the community, and in accordance with AB 2761, we are providing information regarding an in-custody death that occurred at the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp, CA.
At approximately 4:50 p.m. on January 23, 2023, a 46-year-old White male inmate housed in our Sheltered Housing Unit was found unresponsive in his cell. Life-saving measures were immediately initiated while medical staff and emergency responders arrived on scene. The inmate was transported to San Joaquin County General Hospital and was pronounced deceased at 2:43 p.m. on January 25, 2023.
The inmate was housed in a solo cell, and had been in custody since January 20, 2023, facing vandalism charges – PC 594(b)(1). Per standard protocol and policy, an investigation into the inmate’s death was initiated, and is ongoing.
The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death, and will release the name of the deceased after next of kin notification has been made.
